A Shared Commitment to Industry Standards and Digital Transformation
GDSO and RAIN Alliance Sign Collaboration MoU to Advance Digital Tyre Identification Standards
The Global Data Service Organisation for Tyres and Automotive Components (GDSO) is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the RAIN Alliance, marking a significant step forward in the advancement of standardized electronic tyre identification and digitalization across the global tyre value chain.
A Shared Commitment to Industry Standards and Digital Transformation
This collaboration is built on a shared vision: strengthening industry-wide standards and accelerating digital transformation through interoperable, scalable, and globally harmonized solutions.
GDSO leads the definition and deployment of global data standards for tyres, enabling cradle-to-grave use cases that support manufacturers, distributors, fleet operators, service providers, recyclers, regulators, and other stakeholders across the tyre ecosystem.
The
RAIN Alliance promotes the universal adoption of RAIN RFID technology, supporting the development of an open, interoperable, and standards-based RFID ecosystem.
Statement from Riccardo Giovannotti, Secretary General of GDSO
Riccardo Giovannotti, Secretary General of GDSO, stated:
“I’m pleased to share that GDSO has signed a collaboration MoU with RAIN Alliance. The collaboration is grounded in a shared commitment to industry-wide standards and to advancing digitalization across the tyre value chain. As the organization leading the definition and deployment of global data standards for tyres, GDSO focuses on enabling cradle-to-grave use cases through interoperable and scalable solutions. Within today’s standardization landscape, the embedded RAIN RFID (i.e. passive RFID) is currently the only data carrier standardized and technically capable of supporting item-level identification across the full tyre lifecycle, which makes this collaboration both relevant and timely.”
Enabling Electronic Tyre Identification Across the Value Chain
Electronic Tyre Identification is becoming increasingly critical to enable traceability, regulatory compliance, sustainability reporting, circular economy initiatives, and operational efficiency.
Within the current standardization landscape, embedded RAIN RFID (passive RFID) technology represents the only standardized data carrier technically capable of supporting item-level identification throughout the full tyre lifecycle — from manufacturing to end-of-life processing.
This collaboration will foster alignment between data standards and identification technologies, strengthening the ecosystem required to support reliable and scalable digital tyre identification worldwide.
Technology-Agnostic Approach and Ecosystem Development
While recognizing the maturity and standardization of embedded RAIN RFID technology, GDSO remains technology-agnostic. The organization continues to prioritize the development of robust, interoperable global data standards that enable a strong and inclusive ecosystem for electronic tyre identification.
GDSO values the importance of building a resilient ecosystem that supports all stakeholders across the tyre value chain, ensuring flexibility, innovation, and long-term scalability as technologies evolve.
Looking Ahead
Through this collaboration, GDSO and the RAIN Alliance will work together to:
- Promote globally harmonized standards
- Support interoperability across systems and stakeholders
- Enable lifecycle-based digital use cases
- Contribute to sustainability and circular economy objectives
- Strengthen the global electronic tyre identification ecosystem
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing digital infrastructure that benefits the entire tyre industry.
